Justin Moran, a Computer Science major and Start Something LAS Academy Cohort 4 member, was one of several Iowa State University students selected to attend the 2025 Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute (OEI) through the Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. He was also one of the four Start Something LAS Academy students and alumni who participated, along with Amanda Beckett, Jesse Williams, and Zackry Brannen. OEI is a hands-on program designed to inspire and support the next generation of entrepreneurs. Students from across the region engaged in seminars, connected with business leaders, and explored opportunities for growth in northwest Iowa.
Hosted in partnership with area universities and the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation, OEI gives participants mentorship, real-world experience, and the chance to pitch their business ideas to industry professionals.
Justin explained why he applied, “I wanted to further improve the business I am working on.” He first heard about OEI through a friend, but the program quickly proved to be more than just a recommendation, offering a deep dive into entrepreneurship.
During the program, participants toured local businesses and spoke directly with owners about their experiences. They also participated in one-on-one meetings with founders, alumni, and entrepreneurs, gaining practical advice on moving projects forward.
For Justin, the biggest lesson was simple but powerful “You just have to get out there and get what you want done. Iterate as you go. Overthinking doesn’t help you produce better outcomes.”
Reflecting on his experience, he added, “You learn so much about entrepreneurship and you make so many great connections. This is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to take their business to the next level or is just interested in entrepreneurship as a whole.”
OEI continues to be a launchpad for students like Justin, combining real-world insights with meaningful networking opportunities that help turn ideas into action.
